Log Building Course

This summer we are holding our fourth course:

  • June 10-22, 2013
  • Location Pinefalls, Manitoba
  • Registration deadline June 11, 2013

About the Course

Frontiers Foundation of Manitoba is offering an intensive 12 day hands-on scribed log building course. The course will be taught by Walter Keller, a master log construction trainer, carver and forester with over 20 years of experience in log construction in Canada, Germany and Switzerland. He founded the first commercial log building company in Switzerland and published a 70-page manual which serves as the text for the course.

The course participants will construct a small log building from the ground up, providing an opportunity to learn all phases of the log construction process, including the following elements:

  • Building using the Scandinavian full scribe method
  • Handcrafting and fitting the long ridgepole
  • Preparing and installing roof rafters out of round timber
  • Cutting and preparing openings for doors and windows
  • Mounting doors, windows, and ensuring settling space

This 12-day practical learning experience is physically demanding and requires the participants’ full attention and ability to work hard and cooperatively on a construction team. Students are expected to attend the full course and follow directions of instructor and host. In order to achieve the course objectives within the time frame, participants must be able to use a chain saw and must have at least a working knowledge of hand tools and/or the handling of logs.

Upon successful completion of the course the participants will have the ability to construct a small log building on their own with the help of unskilled workers. Graduates of this course have built their own homes, usually with further training or guidance of an experienced log builder.
